Ways to Make a Room Feel Bigger

Every home has a room (or overall space!) that is small and feels small. If you’ve been struggling with how to situate the space to make it feel larger but aren’t having as much luck as you hoped - don’t give up yet! Our team at Spruced Up Staging is sharing their best tips that we’ve learned over the years to help make any space in your home feel a little more elevated and a whole lot bigger.

Incorporate Reflective Surfaces

We recently talked about utilizing reflective surfaces to help make a dark space feel lighter, but they’re also a great way to make a room feel bigger! When a space has natural light, it creates the illusion of space, and mirrors create the illusion of natural light, therefore helping even the tightest of corners look expanded.

If you don’t have wall space for a mirror, consider incorporating other reflective surfaces such as mirrored coffee or side tables, light-bouncing backsplash, or transparent furniture.

Add Substantial Pieces

While it might sound counterintuitive, adding large pieces to a small space will help bring it to life and feel smaller.

A few switches we like to make are replacing gallery walls with a large-scale art piece and adding two large items instead of multiple small items to a sideboard or coffee table.

Opt for Light & Neutral Tones

Adding light, neutral tones to a space automatically make it feel airier because it’s lengthening your visual plane, which helps create a more spacious feeling.

Incorporating light, neutral tones will also bring a sense of calm to any space and I think that’s something we all need!

Utilize Furniture with Legs

Furniture that has legs on them versus a solid base will distribute the weight of the furniture throughout your home and will also help make it seem like there is more floor space. If your couch has a solid base, bring it a coffee table, chairs, or side table that has legs to give the space more balance.

Layer, Layer, Layer

Whether it’s rugs, bedding, or lighting, adding layers to a space will draw the eye and will help make a space look larger. We always make sure rooms that are smaller and have lower ceilings have a mix of overhead lighting, table lamps, and floor lamps to help draw the eye in and illuminate darker corners.
